at first i'll list only the characters that are mentioned in the first couple of episodes without being introduced. then you can also see the others. everything is spoiler-free.
also dont worry if you cant remember all the names at first. maybe while youre watching/reading, let a tab open here. so that everytime a character is mentioned you can look here who the hell they are
note: there are many minor sects, but they are not much important. not all cultivators belong to a clan, unaffiliated cultivators exists.
lan clan: usually dressed in blue/white robes and forehead ribbon the sect lives in cloud recesses, gusu. they are famous for having many rules, also use music as a weapon.
jiang clan: usually dressed in purple robes. their motto is “achieve the impossible”. the sect lives in lotus pier, yunmeng
jin clan: usually dressed in golden robes. they are rich rich. the sect lives in jinlingtai (also called carp tower), lanling
nie clan: usually dressed in green colored robes. the sect lives in unclean realm, qinghe. they use fabers, not swords.
wen clan: usually dressed in red robes. the sect lives in nightless city, qishan. the arrogant, biggest sect. the enemy for many of the “past arcs”
courtesy name: lan wangji birth name: lan zhan title: hanguang jun (light bearing lord), second jade of lan, the man who is “wherever chaos is”
info: he is the love interest. seen by people as a beautiful, stoic, incorruptible man who doesnt talk much. plays the guqin called... wangji. i guess he has a lot of imagination when it comes to naming stuff.

info: lan sect disciple, part of the lan sect lineage (as you can see by his forehead ribbon. if it has clouds, then they're part of the lineage). he's really kind and caring towards others, he can use the ability "inquiry", like lan wangji, to communicate with souls, with his guqin. he stated he sees lan wangji as a “father/older brother”.

info: lan sect disciple. he's blunt and loud which is usually uncommon for lan disciples. he'll give you his opinion without thinking twice about your feelings, often forcing lan sizhui to apologize or soften what he said.

info: lan wangji's older brother. seen as kind, gentle, polite. he would always wear a smile, unlike his younger sibling. he always believes the best of everyone he meets.
info: he is the protagonist. he usually wears black and red robes, not the jiang purple ones. he practices demonic cultivation and uses a flute called chenqing. he is also often mentioned together with the ghost general, an undead corpse who answers his orders. he was adopted by sect leader Jiang Fengmian because of the ties between him and wei wuxian's parents. he's seen by many as a troublemaker, but also a genius, a shameless flirt and a kind person who would do anything for those who are being treated unjustly. he cares about his siblings Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng a lot. after his resurrection you will often see him around with a donkey named lil apple.
info: she's the oldest jiang sibling. she's gentle and caring, especially towards her siblings, taking good care of them. married to jin zixuan (through arranged marriage). her lotus rib soup is very loved by her brothers.

info: Jin Ling's uncle, Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian's younger brother. Famous for being bad tempered and being obsessed by finding info regarding the whereabouts of the yiling patriarch, to the point of torturing people who were suspected or claimed to be possessed by him. He always reproved Wei Wuxian for what he called his “hero complex”.
info: he's Jiang Cheng's nephew. his uncle took care of him since he was a child, when his parents were murdered. he's often seen as a spoiled, moody brat, who is constantly trying to prove his worth and strength despite being an orphan.
info: seen as elegant and insicure, he would disregard martial arts and studying, dedicating himself to visual arts, which would often get scolded by his older brother, leader of the nie sect. instead of a sword, he's more likely to have a fan in his hand.

info: he's wei wuxian's right-hand. he's seen by people as a killing machine, governed by wei wuxian's flute.

info: leader of one of the small sections of the wen sect. one of the greatest and most famous doctors in the cultivation world, she's wen ning's older sister. she is caring towards her younger brother even though she's often scolding him.
